What First Time Denture Wearers Can Do About Temporary Loss of Taste If you’re wearing dentures for the first time, you may notice that food you used to find savory and flavorful may not be as tasty. This is no cause for alarm, however, since many first-time denture wearers report experiencing some loss of taste. Although most of your taste buds are located near the tip and around the edges of your tongue, a significant few can also be found in the roof of your mouth. If you’re wearing full and upper dentures that cover the palate, for example, you will likely experience a decline in your sense of taste. This doesn’t mean that you’ll have to keep eating bland food. Adjusting to new affordable dentures in Houston, TX and elsewhere just requires some getting used to. Here are some tips that can help you better accommodate.

Give It Some Time

A new dental appliance always tends to feel like a foreign object in the mouth. For the first few days, you might always become overly aware of the taste of denture plastic to the point that it could overpower other tastes. Worry not, though, because this is normal and only lasts for a short time. As you gradually gain more confidence in wearing dentures, your brain and nerve receptors will begin to concentrate on other things entering your mouth, helping you regain your sense of taste.

Rethink Your Diet

Eating with new dentures can become a challenge if you don’t pace yourself. To avoid developing discomforts and the risk of damaging them, don’t bite off more than you can chew. It’s best to start with soft foods first or cutting larger foods into bite-sized pieces before putting them in your mouth. Chewing slowly on both sides also helps until you feel you’re ready to re-introduce firmer foods into your diet. Don’t eat too much of sticky foods, but if you must, make sure that they are at least prepared properly so they don’t damage your dentures.

Keep Them Clean

If not cleaned properly and at a regular basis, dentures can also affect the taste of what you eat. Residual deposits may build up, causing a bad taste to linger in your mouth. Not only that, but it can also give you bad breath. Dentures must be brushed thoroughly to remove food stuck in between the teeth and prevent staining. Soaking them in denture cleaning solution overnight is also a good way to care for dentures. Not all patients get accustomed to wearing dentures the same way. Have a discussion with your dentist about issues you experience and what you can do to make the process of adjusting easier.
