A Houston Elder Dentist Recommends Dentures as an Excellent Teeth Replacement Option

Losing any of your teeth is one of the most dreaded natural changes in an aging person’s life. It can have some serious consequences, such as difficulty in eating and speaking. If neglected, the remaining teeth will begin to shift toward the empty gums, further creating problems and the risk of infection in the mouth. Thanks to dentures, missing teeth can now be replaced to restore both the appearance and functionality of your mouth.

Wearing dentures, however, is a significant decision, so it requires some planning and consideration. This way, you can avoid or even debunk certain misconceptions that might affect your choice or give you false knowledge on the way you should care for the dentures once they’re installed.

Myth #1: It is normal for someone wearing dentures to have difficulty eating or speaking.

While there are dental appliances that can be quite annoying inside the mouth, dentures are not among them. They are designed to fit snugly into the oral cavity to mimic teeth without making the wearer feel uncomfortable. Of course, dentures will feel a little bit different but not so much that they always make eating and speaking quite a challenge. In fact, if you notice difficulty while wearing dentures, you should immediately return to your dentist and have it checked.

Myth #2: Dentures are unbreakable.

Unfortunately, just like any other wearable, dentures are not made to last forever. Especially because they will be subject to the pressure of constant chewing and gnashing, they are quite susceptible to breaking and chipping. Remember that even real teeth can break when not cared for properly. Since dentures are made of either acrylic or porcelain, you should take extra care to avoid damaging them.

Myth #3: Once installed, there’s no need to replace your dentures.

As you get older, the structure of your mouth and jaw bones change. Your jawbone may grow or move a little, while your gums may slightly recede or shrink. In spite of all these changes, your dentures will stay the same. This is why they have to be constantly adjusted and ocassionally refitted so that they continue to fit comfortably and securely in the mouth. When they’ve accumulated enough stain and wear, it’s time to get replacement dentures.

Myth #4: It would take a year before you can get used to wearing dentures.

Not quite true enough, anything synthetic replacing something that’s been part of you for years takes some getting used to. However, when it comes to dentures, a couple of months of adjustment is all you need to finally live a normal life again. Just don’t be too conscious about your new dental device and don’t force yourself learn to live with it. You’ll be surprised just how quickly you’ll get used to it.

With advances in dental technology, most of the common issues with dentures have already been addressed.
